A magistrate who locked up a teenager for 10 months after he robbed a 16-year-old boy of his bike at knifepoint told him: "We do not want knives in our city."

Jennifer Joannou told the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, that she felt she had no option but to put him behind bars.

Mrs Joannou, who was sitting at Leicester Youth Court on last Monday said: "You could have killed someone with that knife. That boy thought he was going to die.

"Your crimes are so serious a custodial sentence is justified.

"We order the destruction of the knife. We do not want knives in our city."

Leicester Youth Court

Prosecutor Sally Cook told the court how the 17-year-old stole a bike from the boy after threatening him with a craft knife in Saxby Street, off London Road, on October 17.

She said the robber approached his victim and asked him where he had got his bike from as he had his stolen.

Ms Cook said: "The 17-year-old pulled out a grey craft knife which was seven inches long.

"He clicked open the knife, exposing the blade. He held the knife in a threatening manner.

"The 16-year-old thought he was going to be stabbed. He got off the bike. The 17-year-old got on the bike and a friend got on the handlebars and they cycled off towards Sparkenhoe Street."

The 16-year-old made a victim impact statement read out in court which told how he is now scared to go out.

The statement said: "I thought I was going to die. I have no confidence when I go out.

"I had to ask my grandparents to give me my Christmas money early to buy the bike."

At an earlier hearing, the 17-year-old had denied a charge of robbery and possession of a bladed article on October 17 last year.

He was found guilty after a trial.

The teenager had also pleaded guilty at another earlier hearing to assault and criminal damage on April 17 last year.

Ms Cook told the court how the 17-year-old punched a man after he had been in a car that drove though a big puddle and splashed him and his wife and baby.

She said the man confronted the teenager about the incident and was assaulted, falling to the ground. His and baby witnessed the assault.

Gemma Curtis, defending, said the 17-year-old was of previous good character.

She said: "He hopes to go to college in September. He wants to be a physiotherapist or a personal trainer. His father and sister are in court to support him."

Mrs Joannou gave the teenager six months detention for the robbery and four months for the assault.

Mrs Joannou grilled the 17-year-old and demanded to know why he carried a knife.

She said to him: "Why does an intelligent young man behave like this?

"You could have killed somebody with that knife. That young boy is too almost scared to go out.

"Put yourself in that boy's situation. How would you have felt if you had been threatened, fearing you were going to die?"

She accused the teenager of showing a lack of remorse and shook her head when she found out he had listened to a talk at school from a police officer about the dangers of carrying a knife.

Mrs Joannou said it appeared that football dominated his life and seemed to be the most important factor in his thoughts.

She said to him: "Would a football manager want you in the team knowing that you have behaved like this?

The teenager said: "No they wouldn't."

Mrs Jannnou said: "There is a lot of anger in you and football comes before anything else, nothing else matters.

"You need to reflect very carefully about what you want to do in the future."
