A 45-year-old man suffered multiple fractures to his face after he was attacked from behind in a village street.
Officers believe the attack in Glen Parva may be linked to an incident earlier in the evening when a group of men tried to get into a nearby house party but were denied entry.
The victim was attacked from behind by a group of men in Woodbank, shortly before 11pm on Saturday.
In a statement, Leicestershire Police said: "He was left unconscious.
"He sustained multiple fractures to his face and was discharged from hospital after treatment, but will require major surgery in the future.
"It's believed that prior to the incident a group of men tried to enter a house party nearby and were denied access, this may be linked to the subsequent assault.
"From inquiries conducted so far it's believed that a silver 54 registration plate Ford Fiesta may have been seen in the area and there were others who witnessed the incident.
"If you witnessed the assault or the events leading up to it then please get in touch."
