"It's shocking whenever something like this happens but it just feels like such a violation because there are pictures of the children all over the walls and these people just didn't care - they went around smashing things and taking the children's sweets."

Items taken in the burglary included a camera and camera equipment, which also had a memory card full of treasured pictures of the youngsters, aged thee and four, who attend the playgroup.

About £200 in cash was also taken from the premises as well as other things including a can of coffee.

Kerri said: "The Memorial Hall was being used as a polling station all night until 10pm on Thursday night so it must have happened after that.

She said the way people had rallied round the playgroup and lifted her spirits.
