A father-of-five's blood was discovered on the shirt of a man charged with his murder, a court has been told.

Steve McKinnon, of Uppingham Road, Leicester, died after he suffered severe head injuries in an incident outside the Durham Ox pub in Belgrave, Leicester, on June 6 last year.

Eugene Bell (29), of Helmsley Road, Leicester, Ross Lowndes (27), of Windley Road, Leicester, Gurdev Sangha (24), of Overdale Avenue, Glenfield, and Phillip Merry (28), of Pinewood Avenue, Thurmaston, are on trial at Nottingham Crown Court accused of Mr McKinnon's murder.

They all deny the charge.

Jane Martin, a forensic scientist, told the trial today that Mr McKinnon's blood was found on the outside and inside right cuff of Sangha's white shirt.

The court was also read a transcription of a police interview with Bell after he was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm last summer in relation to Mr McKinnon, while Mr McKinnon was in the intensive care unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

During the interview, it was put to Bell that he had been seen stamping on someone's head.

Bell said: "I didn't stamp on anyone's head. I received a phone call from my cousin, Ross [Lowndes], who was at the Durham Ox. He was attacked by 25 people. He was meant to be working there."

Bell said he went to pick up Lowndes.

However, he said that when he arrived, Lowndes was being attacked by a group of 20 to 30 people and they were all fighting each other.

He said: "It was mayhem. They were all fighting against themselves.

"I pushed people away from us, but I didn't push people over.

"I was defending myself by pushing people away. All I wanted to do was to get my cousin out of there and get me out of there."

When asked if he knew Sangha, who had been arrested earlier, he said: "Never heard of him."

When asked if he knew Merry, he said: "I do not wish to discuss that information."

The trial continues.
